The flag
The flag of the German-speaking Community | The heraldic animal of the German-speaking Community is the lion, which refers to the lions of the former duchies of Limbourg and of Luxembourg. This reference is due to the fact that the region of Eupen has belonged to Limbourg and a large part of the region of Sankt-Vith to Luxembourg until 1794.
Nine stylised flowers, the Marsh gentians, which grow in the „Hautes Fagnes“, surround the heraldic animal. The nine flowers represent the nine municipalities of the German language region.
The royal crown, the symbol that the German-speaking Community belongs to the Belgian kingdom, tops the flag.
