The President of the Parliament
The President’s main task consists in co-ordinating parliamentary work. Usually, the President belongs to a majority party.
The President’s role is aimed at chairing the plenary meetings but does not express its political opinion. S/He has to stay out of the discussion carried on among the various parties. In case s/he wishes to enter into the political debate, s/he will then be obliged to get someone else to chair temporarily.
Like all the other members of the Bureau, the President is confirmed in office at the beginning of every parliamentary session.
Overview of the President’s tasks:
- S/He judges the admissibility of the cases referred to the Parliament.
- S/He manages the activities of the Parliament and of the Bureau.
- S/He sees to the keeping of the agenda.
- S/He maintains law and order during the debates.
- S/He decides who takes the floor.
- S/He announces the results of the votes.
- S/He supervises the execution of the decisions taken by the Parliament and the Bureau.
- S/He represents the Parliament outside.
Within the scope of activities, the President is assisted by a secretary general.
Ferdel Schröder is the ninth President of the Parliament.
On 1st February 2010, Ferdel Schröder was made President of the Parliament of the German-speaking Community. He is the ninth President of the legislative body of the Community.
