Population density

On 1st January 2003, the population of the German-speaking Community was 71,571 (83.8 inh./km²). The population density within the district of Eupen ( in the north) is drastically different from that within the district of St Vith ( in the south):

  • District of Eupen : 42,653 inhabitants – 189.7 inhabitants/km²
  • District of St. Vith : 28,918 inhabitants – 46 inhabitants/km²

The population gap between the north and the south is even more striking when the municipality situated in the northern end and that in the southern end are compared:

  • The most densely populated municipality is Kelmis (559.2 inhabitants/km²);
  • The most poorly populated municipality is Burg-Reuland (35.2 inhabitants/km²).

By way of a comparison: the population density of Belgium is 339.2 inhabitants/km², that of Wallonia is 200 inh./km² and that of Flanders is 443.4 inh./km².

With 49.19 %, men are less represented within the population of the German-speaking Community than women who are in the majority with 50.81 % (in Belgium: 48.68 % men to 51.32 % women).
