The DG in the Maas-Rhine Euregio

The following regions belong to the trans-frontier Maas-Rhine Euregio:

  • the DG,
  • the Province of Liege,
  • the Province of Belgian-Limburg,
  • the Province of Dutch-Limburg
  • and the Greater Aachen Region.

The Euregio contains about 3.8 million inhabitants. The purpose of the Maas-Rhine Euregio is to encourage cooperation between the neighbouring frontier regions. To this end it develops partnership projects in the fields of tourism, economic cooperation, disaster prevention and relief, language projects, technological transfer and prophylactic health-care. As the deciding body on the granting of European (Interreg Financing) funds in the area, the Maas-Rhine Euregio has placed substantial funds at the disposition of the DG for the co-financing of its trans-frontier projects.

The DG is represented in the Executive Directorate of the Maas-Rhine Euregio by its Prime Minister, Karl-Heinz Lambertz, Ministers Harald Mollers and Isabelle Weykmans, as well as at the Communal level by the Mayor of Raeren, Hans-Dieter Laschet.

The following representatives of the DG currently serve in the 81-member strong parliamentary Euregional Council:

  • in the chamber for political representatives: Herbert Weisskirchen (CSP), Jean-Luc Velz (SP), Annabelle Mockel (PFF), Marc Lazarus (ProDG) und Karl-Heinz Braun (Ecolo);
  • in the chamber for economic representatives: Erich Thönnes and Bernd Despineux.
