The German-speaking Community in Europe
The European idea considerably affects the identity and the consciousness of the German-speaking Community’s inhabitants. People make sure of keeping many cross-border social, commercial and cultural contacts with the European neighbour regions; many of them do not only express themselves in their mother tongue but also in French and Dutch.
The German-speaking Community is incorporated in the euroregional and European structures.
- It executes treaties with the European partner regions (e.g. South Tyrol) or states (e.g. the Republic of Hungary);
- It ratifies the European and international agreements that refer to the competence field of the community (e.g. the EU draft constitution);
- It is a member of the foundation Euregio Meuse-Rhine and of the cross-border regional centre Saar–Lor–Lux;
- It is represented within the European Union politically speaking. Mathieu Grosch (CSP) is the member of the European Parliament representing the German-speaking Community.
